The impetus for establishing a stringent control mechanism internally before the EU issued its directive was Samsung Electronics’ management philosophy emphasizing the environment. Samsung Electronics has been proactively managing environmentally sensitive substances since 2004, two years in advance of the EU’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. We go beyond regulated substance restrictions and also voluntarily restrict environmentally sensitive materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), beryllium and antimony. We have established and we disclose our ‘Standards for Control of Substances Used in Products’ and have been conducting thorough supplier inspections and follow-up management on all components and raw materials that are used. Under the principle of “no compromise on environmental issues" Samsung Electronics closely manages and restricts the use of environmentally sensitive substances.

By reinforcing the Eco-Life Lab with professional analytical systems, we were certified by Germany’s Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and international testing and certification institution TUV Rheinland, being acknowledged for our expertise and reliability. We also run a lab to verify microbes with new infrastructure including the temperature and humidity chambers along with analytical instruments. In addition, we recruited microbial experts with masters and doctorate degrees for microbial analysis which is like uncharted waters in electronics. The Environmental Analysis Lab was renamed to ‘Eco-Life Lab’ in 2020 and is equipped with exclusive chambers for odors and precision analysis instruments for analytical capabilities on major odor compounds. In 2004, we founded the ‘Environmental Analysis Lab’ to analyze the six major restricted substances identified by EU RoHS which was expanded in 2007 to include volatile organic chemicals produced from products.
To meet the expectations of consumers on emotional quality that has been in demand lately, Samsung Electronics has been consistently researching and investing on identifying and addressing the cause for odor and microbes. Running the Eco-Life Lab to Analyze Health and Hygiene-related Elements Samsung semiconductors continue to take steps forward, and its environmentally conscious footprints will lead us to a better future. We are also endeavoring to attain certification from the Korean Environmental Product Declaration and the low carbon certification. Up till 2021, 18 of our products have obtained carbon footprint certifications and six products have acquired the Lower Carbon Label. The Carbon Trust grants the Lower Carbon Label when a newly released product emits less carbon dioxide compared to the previous model. We are expanding the line of products to get certified in 2021, adding five more memory products and four system semiconductors to the list. Semiconductors go through hundreds of complex manufacturing stages in which various materials are used in large quantities, making it especially difficult to attain carbon footprint certification.
Samsung Electronics was the first in the industry to be certified by the UK’s Carbon Trust on Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) and received the Lower Carbon Label. We assessed the stages of a product from pre-manufacture, manufacture, distribution, use to disposal through 12 environmental impact categories1) to analyze the impact each stage has on global warming and are doubling down on developing products with minimal greenhouse gas emissions based on the results.
Moreover, we perform a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to analyze the environmental impacts of the entire life cycle of our products across product manufacture, use, and disposal stages and reflect the results in our product development process. In order to validate this assessment, we have adopted the certification criteria from the Ministry of Environment of Korea’s Eco-labelling system, the United States’ Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) Certification, and the United States’ Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) Certification. Samsung Electronics performs environmental assessments on its products from the product development stage using its own assessment system.
